Guide
Approach and anchoring
Accessible by the navigable Rhône between the Gervans lock upstream and the Bourg-lès-Valence lock downstream. Strong current after rain, stay clear of the main channel used by commercial barges and hotel-barge traffic. Limited pontoon with about 4 berths, maximum draught around 2 m.
Practical
Short stopover mainly. Water on pontoon. Town centre and shops within a 5-minute walk. La Roche-de-Glun port is 3.3 NM downstream for a longer stay with more services.
Ashore
Château de Tournon, a 14th and 16th century fortress above the river, houses the town museum 300 m from the pontoon. The Marc Seguin pedestrian suspension bridge, built in 1825 and rebuilt in 1847, crosses to Tain-l'Hermitage. Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage vineyards rise on the opposite bank.
History
Tournon was a Rhône crossing point from Roman times. Marc Seguin built one of the first cable suspension bridges in continental Europe here in 1825.
