Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Rhône navigable channel. The pontoon sits upstream of the suspension footbridge linking Tournon to Tain. Watch the current, which can reach 4 to 5 knots on the Rhône during spring melt. Moor bow or stern into the stream.
Practical
Floating pontoon with water and electricity. No fuel on site. Town centre and shops within 200 m. SNCF station Tournon-Tain on the opposite bank via the footbridge.
Ashore
Hermitage vineyards rise directly above Tain-l'Hermitage on the far bank, reached on foot via the Passerelle Marc Seguin. Château de Tournon above the quay houses a museum on Rhône navigation. Train du Vivarais steam line departs from the town for Lamastre.
History
Tournon was a crossing point on the Rhône from Roman times. The first suspension bridge in continental Europe was built here in 1825 by Marc Seguin, replaced in 1849 after collapse.
Story
The Lycée Gabriel-Faure in Tournon, founded in 1536, is one of the oldest secondary schools in France and counted Stéphane Mallarmé among its teachers in the 1860s.
