Full-service marina on the eastern shore of upper Chesapeake Bay, at buoy 21, about 20 miles north of the Bay Bridge and 30 miles south of the C&D Canal.

Approach and anchoring

Straightforward approach from the main bay channel, entering through a marked cut. Berth depths run six to seven feet at mean low water. Use the C&D Canal route for transits down from Delaware Bay. Safe Harbor Great Oak Landing lies 3.6 NM north-east, Haven Harbor South 4.9 NM south, both useful fallbacks in heavy weather.

Practical

Around 250 berths with 30 and 50 amp shore power and fresh water at most slips. Fuel berth with petrol and diesel, pump-out, showers and heads. On-site travel lift, mechanical and fibreglass workshop, parts department. Restaurant, waterfront pool and private beach for berth holders and transients.

Ashore

Tolchester Beach itself is a former steamboat resort, with the marina occupying the old amusement park site. Chestertown, on the Chester River, is 15 miles south by road and holds a Saturday farmers' market. Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, a wintering ground for tundra swans, is 18 miles south.

History

Tolchester Beach was a major steamboat destination from 1877 to 1962, drawing day-trippers from Baltimore across the bay to its hotel, bathing beach and amusement park. The park closed when the Bay Bridge ended the steamer trade. The marina was built on the cleared site in the 1960s.
