Tidal sound off Brunswick on the Georgia coast, with a mud bottom and two marinas within half a mile to the north-east.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The sound carries the deep-water channel into the Port of Brunswick, so expect commercial shipping traffic. Mud bottom gives good holding. The anchorage is open to N, NE and E winds. Morningstar Marinas lies 0.2 nm to the NE and St Simons Marina 0.6 nm in the same direction.
History
On 8 September 2019 the car carrier MV Golden Ray capsized in the sound shortly after leaving the Port of Brunswick. All 23 crew and the pilot survived. The 200 metre wreck was cut into eight sections in place over more than two years, the largest shipwreck removal in US history.
