Approach and anchoring
Approach from San Diego Bay main channel, then turn into the Shelter Island Yacht Basin from the east. The basin is well marked and sheltered from open ocean swell by Shelter Island. Reciprocal moorage is the usual route for visiting yachtsmen.
Practical
Around 385 berths, mainly for members and reciprocal guests. Power, water and showers on the pontoons. Clubhouse with The Chart Room restaurant and bar, refurbished in 2010.
Ashore
Shelter Island Shoreline Park runs along the basin with a paved path used for walking and cycling. Shelter Island Drive has chandleries, sailmakers and several restaurants within 400 metres.
History
Founded in 1925 by a group of San Diego yachtsmen, the club moved to its current Point Loma location after Shelter Island was built up from dredge spoil in the early 1950s.
