Approach and anchoring
The Back River is a tidal inlet of Chesapeake Bay formed by its North-West and South-West branches. The Southwest Branch carries protected water with mud holding and shelter from most directions. Aircraft noise from the nearby Langley Air Force Base can carry across the anchorage.
Practical
A useful overnight stop for boats running up from Norfolk before the Newport News and Hampton shipping lanes. Langley Marina is 0.6 nm to the south-west and Marina Cove Boat Basin 1.1 nm to the north-east.
