Guide
Approach and anchoring
Commercial waterway with cargo traffic, monitor VHF 10 on the Seine. Bottom of mud and weed, holding fair when the fluke bites through the weed. Sheltered from NW, N and S by the wooded banks. Exposed to wash from passing barges. Anchor clear of the main channel and show the correct day shape or anchor light.
Practical
No services at the anchorage. Port de Venables 1.1 NM NE with pontoons, water and electricity. Quai public de Muids 1.3 NM NE for a short public stopover alongside.
Ashore
Château Gaillard above Les Andelys, fortress built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196 and 1197 on a chalk spur overlooking the Seine, about 3 km from the river by road. Église Saint-Sauveur in Petit Andely dates from the 13th century. Marked riverside footpath along the Seine loop.
History
Richard the Lionheart raised Château Gaillard in barely two years to block the French royal advance down the Seine. The fortress fell to Philippe Auguste in 1204 after a long siege and the loss of Normandy to the French crown followed within months.
