Approach and anchoring
Navigation on the Seine at PK 170, between the Poses dam downstream and the Notre-Dame de la Garenne lock upstream. Commercial traffic, keep to the right of the channel. Current sustained after winter rainfall, consult VNF for levels.
Practical
Private pontoons, no guaranteed visitor berth, arrangements must be made with the owner before arrival. Water and shore power available. Bakery, supermarket and restaurants in Le Petit Andely at 800 m.
Ashore
Château Gaillard at 1.5 km by the signed footpath, fortress built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196 to defend Normandy from the French crown. Église Saint-Sauveur of Le Petit Andely, Gothic church from the thirteenth century, at 700 m. Musée Nicolas Poussin in Le Grand Andely at 1.8 km.
History
Château Gaillard fell to Philippe Auguste in 1204 after a six month siege, a turning point in the loss of Normandy by the Plantagenets. Les Andelys later became a river port for the limestone quarried in the surrounding cliffs, shipped downstream to Rouen.
