Lock and quays at Poses-Amfreville on the Seine, the last lock before the tidal estuary, 160 km upstream of Le Havre.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach by the Seine, commercial traffic heavy: keep to the waiting pontoon below the lock and call the lock keeper on VHF 18 before entering. Two parallel chambers 185 m long, one usually reserved for commercial barges. Current can run at 3 to 4 knots when the weirs are open.

Practical

Pleasure quays above and below the lock, water and power on the upstream side. No fuel berth at the lock itself. Village of Poses on the right bank with bakery, small grocery and two restaurants at about 500 m. Amfreville-sous-les-Monts on the left bank at 1 km.

Ashore

Maison de l'eau et de la riviere museum at the lock complex, covering the Seine ecosystem and the fish pass. Lery-Poses leisure park with lake beach and water sports at about 3 km on the right bank. Chalk cliffs of the Cote des Deux-Amants above Amfreville with a viewpoint over the confluence of the Eure and the Seine, 2 km walk.

History

The Poses barrage was rebuilt in its current form in 1887 and modernised in the 1990s. It marks the tidal limit of the Seine: downstream, the river runs with the North Sea tides up to Rouen and the estuary; upstream, the Seine is fully canalised to Paris through a chain of locks.
