Guide

Approach and anchoring

Inside Santa Cruz Harbour. The entrance is exposed to Pacific swell and prone to shoaling from sand drifting around the west jetty. The Port District dredges the entrance channel each winter, between 1 November and 1 May. Breaking waves can form at the bar in heavy weather.

Practical

Member clubhouse on Lake Avenue. No transient berths at the club. Visitor berths, fuel, water and launch ramp are managed by the Santa Cruz Port District in the same harbour basin.

History

Founded on 5 January 1928 by Bruce Sharpe, Charlie Towne, Sam Leask Jr and a dozen friends at the Saddle Rock Grill. The club moved to the harbour after the South Harbour was completed in 1964. In 1977 Bill Lee's Merlin, designed and built in Santa Cruz, broke the Transpac record, putting the club at the centre of the Ultra Light Displacement Boat movement.
