Approach and anchoring

Reach Rouen by the Seine from the estuary at Le Havre, 65 nautical miles upstream. The river is tidal up to the Poses lock further east and the flood current can exceed 4 knots near the Tancarville bridge. Traffic is controlled by the Rouen VTS on VHF 73, and plaisance must give way to commercial shipping. Berth on the pontoon downstream of the Pont Guillaume-le-Conquerant. Maximum draught 2.6 m. Harbourmaster on VHF 9.

Practical

Only 4 berths, reservation recommended in season. Diesel available. Water and electricity on the pontoon. City centre on foot, SNCF station Rouen Rive-Droite at 900 m.

Ashore

Cathedrale Notre-Dame of Rouen, painted by Monet in a series of 30 canvases, stands at 400 m from the pontoon. Place du Vieux-Marche where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431 is at 300 m. Gros-Horloge astronomical clock of 1389 on rue du Gros-Horloge at 350 m.

History

Rouen was the capital of the duchy of Normandy and a major river port on the Seine from the Middle Ages. Joan of Arc was tried and burned at the stake on the place du Vieux-Marche on 30 May 1431. The city was heavily bombed in 1944 but the cathedral, though damaged, was rebuilt.
