Anchorage in Stirling Basin off Greenport, on the North Fork of Long Island, with sand and mud bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from Gardiners Bay by leaving the stone breakwater off Greenport to starboard, then steer about 340 magnetic and follow the red and green channel marks into the basin. The approach channel carries 12 metres or more of water. Tidal range is roughly 1 metre.
Practical
The basin holds open water for anchoring north of the marina pontoons. Holding is good in sand and mud. Two Safe Harbor marinas lie within 1.6 miles to the south, Stirling and Greenport, with fuel, water and pumpout.
Story
The basin sits beside Greenport village, a former whaling and oystering port, with the Long Island Rail Road terminus and the Shelter Island ferry close by.
