Approach and anchoring

Long Beach Bar Light, the screw-pile lighthouse known locally as Bug Light, marks the end of the bar and the channel into the Peconic Bays. Keep clear of the drying sand off the point and anchor in its lee on sand and mud.

Practical

An open anchorage sheltered from north-east through south to south-east, exposed to the south-west. Holding on sand and mud is fair. There are no services at the point; Orient Yacht Club lies about 1.4 miles to the north and Narrow River Marina about 1.7 miles to the north-east.

History

Long Beach Bar Light was first built in 1870 on screw piles, leaving an open space beneath that earned it the name Bug Light. Decommissioned in 1948 and lost to fire in 1963, it was rebuilt on the original foundation in 1990 and re-lit as a navigational aid in 1993.
