Public visitor pontoon on the Sampit River in Georgetown, South Carolina, set into the Harborwalk boardwalk along Front Street, with Harborwalk Marina alongside.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from the ICW via Winyah Bay and the Sampit River, with the entry channel running west to the town front. Approach depths around 10 to 12 feet at the pontoons. The Sampit is tidal, with a range of about 1 metre and a noticeable current along the waterfront.
Practical
Short-stay alongside on the public floats. Full services on the Harborwalk Marina pontoon next door at 525 Front Street, with around 50 berths and 30 transient slips. Restaurants, shops and the three town museums are directly along the boardwalk.
Ashore
The 1100-foot Harborwalk runs the length of the historic district, with the Rice Museum, the South Carolina Maritime Museum and the Kaminski House Museum within 300 m. Front Street has restaurants and chandlery. East Bay Park and small-craft landing are at the east end of the boardwalk.
History
Georgetown was founded in 1729 and is the third oldest town in South Carolina. Built at the confluence of the Waccamaw, Pee Dee, Black and Sampit rivers, it became the centre of the colonial indigo and rice trade. The Harborwalk was built in 1988 to reconnect the historic district to its working river.
