Deep-water marina on the Sampit River just off the Intracoastal Waterway at Georgetown, South Carolina, used as a hurricane hole.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
On the Sampit River, a short run off the Intracoastal Waterway channel. Year-round deep water with an average depth around 34 metres. No tidal gate; the river carries some current.
Practical
Floating docks on pilings standing about 20 feet above the deck, which makes it one of the more storm-secure marinas on the coast. Berths, a fuel dock and a boat ramp on site. Historic Georgetown, with its harbourfront shops and restaurants, lies about 2.6 miles east.
Story
The Sampit River holds brackish-water red drum, while the offshore grounds reached from here yield wahoo, king mackerel, tuna and snapper.
