Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east into the natural inlet between two rocky headlands. Shelter is excellent from all directions apart from heavy E and SE swell. Tramontane funnels down from the NW and can reach gale force. Max draught 8.6 m, the deepest of the Pyrénées-Orientales. VHF 9.
Practical
270 berths managed by the regional chamber of commerce. Water, electricity, showers and toilets. Active commercial and fishing port alongside the yachting basin. Shops, market on the Place de l'Obélisque and fish auction in the town. Collioure at 1 NM NW, Banyuls-sur-Mer at 2.5 NM SE.
Ashore
Obelisk of 1780 on the Quai Pierre Forgas honouring Louis XVI, at 100 m from the pontoons. Redoute Béar fort above the port to the south at 1 km, part of the Vauban defences of Roussillon. Coastal path of the douaniers to Collioure and Cap Béar lighthouse from the quay.
History
Port-Vendres takes its name from a Roman temple of Venus, Portus Veneris, attested at the site. The town was laid out on a grid by the engineer Charles De Wailly under Louis XVI from 1772, around the obelisk still standing on the main quay.
Story
The painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh lived and worked in Port-Vendres from 1923 to 1927 and produced a series of watercolours of the port and the Pyrenean coast.
