Oyster-farming port at Gujan-Mestras on the southern shore of the Bassin d'Arcachon, the main shellfish harbour of the basin.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access through the marked channels of the Bassin d'Arcachon, shallow and dries at low water springs. Enter on a rising tide. Local knowledge or up-to-date chartplotter strongly recommended for the inner channels.
Practical
Working oyster port with pontoons shared between professionals and visiting yachts. Water on quayside. Limited visitor capacity. Shops, bakery, and the SNCF station of Gujan-Mestras within 1 km of the harbour.
Ashore
Maison de l'Huître on the quay explains oyster farming in the basin, which produces around 8,000 tonnes a year and supplies roughly 60 percent of French oyster spat. The Coulée Verte cycle path links Larros to La Teste and Arcachon along the basin shore.
