Tidal harbour at La Teste-de-Buch on the Bassin d'Arcachon, used by oyster farmers and leisure boats, just south of Arcachon town.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the Bassin d'Arcachon through the shifting Passes, then follow the marked chenal towards La Teste. Port de l'Aiguillon opens onto the Chenal de Teychan. Tide-dependent, the basin dries widely at low water of springs. Watch for oyster-farming stakes and strong tidal streams on the ebb.
Practical
Drying harbour with a mix of resident moorings and a few visitor spaces. Water and power on the quays. Fuel, shops and chandlery at Port de la Teste and Port d'Arcachon 0,5 NM to the N. Dry-stack port 0,2 NM to the SW.
Ashore
Oyster village of Cabanes de l'Aiguillon on site, with several huts serving oysters and white wine. Town centre of La Teste-de-Buch within 15 min on foot, market hall every morning. Dune du Pilat, the highest sand dune in Europe at 106 m, is about 8 km to the SW.
History
La Teste-de-Buch is the oldest settlement on the Bassin d'Arcachon and was the cradle of Arcachon oyster farming in the second half of the 19th century. The port of l'Aiguillon has grown from an ostreicole base into a mixed fishing, shellfish and pleasure harbour.
