Oyster and leisure port on the south-east shore of the Bassin d'Arcachon at Gujan-Mestras, Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access via the Canal du Meyran through the tidal channel from the main basin. Port dries at low water of spring tides. Entry and departure 2 hours either side of high water. La Hume port lies 0.8 NM W.

Practical

Mix of oyster-farming berths and pleasure pontoons. Water on the quay. Capitainerie handles visitor moorings on request. Gujan-Mestras town centre at 1.5 km with all shops.

Ashore

Gujan-Mestras is known as the oyster capital of the Bassin d'Arcachon with seven oyster ports. Cabanes serve oysters directly on the quayside. Parc de la Coste cycling path links the seven ports. La Hume beach at 1.5 km.

History

The oyster industry of the Bassin d'Arcachon was structured in the 1860s after Napoleon III ordered the creation of formal oyster concessions. Gujan-Mestras still produces a large share of French cupped oyster spat.
