Small harbour of 4 berths on the east side of Hœdic, a 2.5 km long island in the Mor Braz off southern Brittany, between Houat and Belle-Île.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east or south, keeping clear of the Men Groise and Les Grands Cardinaux lighthouse to the south-east. The harbour is a simple jetty with limited shelter from winds between north-east and south-east. Port de l'Argol to the north is the main harbour of the island, 0.6 NM away.
Practical
Four berths, essentially used by local fishing boats and a few visitors. No fuel, no chandlery. Showers and shops in the village of Hœdic, about 500 m walk. Ferries to Quiberon and La Turballe call at Port de l'Argol.
Ashore
Coastal path runs around the whole island, roughly 8 km in total. Fort d'Hœdic, built under Napoleon III in the 1850s, is a 15 minute walk. Plage de la Croix beach lies directly next to the port. Sainte-Cécile chapel in the village centre, 500 m.
History
Hœdic and its neighbour Houat were part of the Abbey of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys from the 11th century. The island population has always lived from fishing, notably for sardines and lobster. The fort was one of a chain built to guard the approaches to the Morbihan.
