Approach and anchoring
Access by the Canal du Rhône à Sète between Aigues-Mortes and Saint-Gilles. Maximum draught 2 m. No tide, no marked channel. Mast stepping required upstream as the canal is fixed-bridge limited. Approach on engine only, speed capped at 8 km/h on the canal.
Practical
38 berths alongside the quay. Water and electricity on the pontoon. Fuel is not available on site. Small grocery, bakery and a handful of restaurants in Gallician village within 300 m.
Ashore
Maison du Guide de Camargue and Centre du Scamandre wetland reserve at 1 km, with birdwatching paths through reed beds. Aigues-Mortes ramparts reachable by bike along the canal towpath at about 11 km west. AOC Costières de Nîmes vineyards surround the village.
History
The Canal du Rhône à Sète was completed in 1829 to link the Rhône delta to the Étang de Thau and avoid the hazardous coastal navigation off the Gulf of Lion.
