Approach and anchoring
Access via the Canal du Rhône à Sète, which runs from the Petit Rhône at Saint-Gilles to the port of Sète. Lock at Saint-Gilles connects the canal to the Petit Rhône. Freycinet gauge, maximum draught 1.80 m. VNF-operated lock hours in season.
Practical
Free mooring on the VNF quay, 48 hours maximum. Water at the kiosk, electricity by token at the tourist office. No fuel. Supermarket 700 m, bakery and restaurants in the old town within 1 km.
Ashore
Abbey church of Saint-Gilles 1.9 km north, 12th century Romanesque facade inscribed on UNESCO list as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. Entrance to the Camargue regional natural park 3 km south. Tour bird observation site of Scamandre 12 km west.
History
Saint-Gilles was a major pilgrimage stop on the way to Santiago de Compostela from the 11th century. The abbey was founded in the 7th century by the hermit Aegidius and became one of the four great pilgrim churches of medieval France.
