Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access via the Canal du Rhône à Sète from Beaucaire to the east or Aigues-Mortes to the west. The Saint-Gilles lock links the canal to the Petit Rhône. Air draught limited by canal bridges, max draught 1.8 m.

Practical

Small halte with one berth at the town quay. Two other VNF haltes 1.7 and 1.9 NM south on the canal. Water on quay, shops and bakeries in the village within 400 m.

Ashore

Abbey church of Saint-Gilles 300 m from the quay, Romanesque west front from the 12th century, listed on the UNESCO routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. Entrance to the Petite Camargue wetlands south of the town.

History

Saint-Gilles was a major medieval pilgrimage town on the Via Tolosana to Santiago de Compostela. The abbey was founded in the 9th century and its sculpted west front is a reference work of Provençal Romanesque art.
