Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south through the Plateau du Milieu channel between Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat. Weed bottom, so drop and back down firmly to set the anchor. Open to W, SW and S swell, tenable only in settled weather or easterlies.
Ashore
Fort Royal and the Musée de la Mer are a 15-minute walk west along the coastal path. Sentier botanique loops the island through eucalyptus and Aleppo pine woodland. Restaurant L'Escale at the Sainte-Marguerite jetty, 1.2 NM NW.
History
Fort Royal was used as a state prison from 1687. The Man in the Iron Mask was held there for eleven years until his transfer to the Bastille in 1698.
