Approach and anchoring

Approach from the Cannes roadstead on a SE heading, clearing the Pointe de la Convention. Max draught 1 m at the pontoon. VHF 9. Ferries from Cannes use the same pier and have priority.

Practical

1 day berth for tenders or small craft dropping off visitors. No water or power at the pontoon. Anchorage on sand north of the island in 4 to 8 m is the usual overnight option.

Ashore

Fort Royal and the Musee de la Mer at 300 m from the pier, where the Man in the Iron Mask was held from 1687 to 1698. Sentier botanique loop around the island through umbrella pines and eucalyptus, about 3 km. No cars on the island.

History

The fort was built under Richelieu and enlarged by Vauban. The island has held state prisoners from the late 17th century and now houses a museum on Mediterranean shipwrecks including Roman and Saracen finds.
