Sand anchorage off the long Plage Napoléon at Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, on the eastern side of the Rhône delta in the Camargue.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open roadstead east of the Rhône outflow. Sand bottom, good holding. Shelter is marginal: the listed quarters cover NW, NE, W, E, SW and SE but the fetch remains long. Avoid in any fresh mistral from NW. Keep clear of the commercial approaches to Fos-sur-Mer and of fishing nets set close inshore.
Practical
No facilities on the beach. Carteau and Port Olga lie 1.7 NM to the NW at the mouth of the Canal Saint-Louis for water and supplies. Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône town centre is 4 km inland.
Ashore
Plage Napoléon stretches for about 6 km and gives direct access to the Camargue regional nature park and its wetlands. Flamingos, horses and bulls are often seen in the adjacent Domaine de la Palissade, a protected estate managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral.
