Anchorage on the east bank of the Hudson River off the village of Ossining, in Westchester County about 30 miles north of Manhattan.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchor in the river off the village, where soundings give around 8 feet over a mud bottom. Holding is good in mud, but the anchorage is open to the eastern quarter and exposed to wash from passing river traffic.
Practical
No facilities at anchor. Half Moon Bay Marina lies 2.2 miles north at Croton-on-Hudson with deep-water berths behind a sea wall, and Nyack Boat Club is 4.6 miles to the south-west.
Ashore
The Edward M. Wheeler Crawbuckie nature reserve covers 26 acres of wooded riverfront south of the village, linked to the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. The Croton-Harmon railway station gives a direct line into Manhattan.
History
The village was called Sing Sing until 1901, when it took the name Ossining to separate itself from Sing Sing prison, built on the riverbank from 1825 using local stone quarried on site.
