Approach and anchoring

From Fishers Island Sound, follow the buoyed channel up the Mystic River, NOAA chart 13214. The channel is narrow and twists between shoals on either side. The Mystic River Railroad Bridge opens on request unless a train is due. The Mystic River Highway Bridge, route 1, opens 20 minutes before each hour from 7:40 to 18:40 and on request outside those slots. Both bridges work VHF 13. Dock office on VHF 71.

Practical

Around 60 m of visitor pontoon space inside the museum basin, plus 60 m managed downtown just north of the drawbridge, in front of S&P Oyster. Dock office open daily 09:00 to 17:00 in season. Bookings via Dockwa. Berthing fee includes museum entry for crew.

Ashore

The museum grounds cover 7 hectares with more than 60 historic buildings reassembled as a 19th-century seafaring village, plus a working preservation shipyard. Downtown Mystic and its restaurants are 500 m south of the museum dock, the other side of the drawbridge.

History

The Marine Historical Association, today Mystic Seaport Museum, was incorporated on 25 December 1929 by Edward Bradley, Carl Cutler and Charles Stillman to preserve the heritage of the American age of sail. The 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaler afloat and the oldest surviving American commercial vessel, joined the collection in 1941 and sailed her 38th voyage in 2014.
