Full-service marina on the east bank of the Acushnet River in Fairhaven, opposite New Bedford, operated by the Northeast Maritime Institute.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from Buzzards Bay via the New Bedford hurricane barrier, then run north up the Acushnet River channel. Slocum Cove opens to port roughly 0.5 nm above the barrier. The channel is well buoyed; favour mid-channel above the gap.
Practical
72 berths plus 7 mooring buoys and 12 winter storage spaces. Shore power, fresh water, heads and showers. Home to the institute's training fleet and college sailing team.
Ashore
Fairhaven village centre and Fort Phoenix State Reservation at roughly 1.5 km south. Ferry to Cuttyhunk from New Bedford, 2 km across the river. New Bedford Whaling Museum at 3 km on the west bank.
History
The cove takes its name from Joshua Slocum, the Fairhaven captain who completed the first solo circumnavigation aboard the sloop Spray between 1895 and 1898. He departed from Fairhaven, less than 100 m from the present marina.
