Municipal marina of 53 berths on Shallowbag Bay at Manteo, on Roanoke Island in the North Carolina sounds.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from Roanoke Sound through Shallowbag Bay. Good holding off the waterfront between the gazebo and the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse for those preferring to anchor and run a tender ashore.
Practical
The harbour takes vessels up to about 100 feet, with roughly 20 transient berths among the 53 total. All berths have 30 and 50 amp shore power and wi-fi. A pump-out station serves visiting boats. The town also allows free overnight tie-up with no services on a space-available basis. Shops and restaurants line the boardwalk in the town centre.
History
Manteo sits on Roanoke Island, where 117 English settlers landed in 1587 in the venture remembered as the Lost Colony. Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas, was born here that August. The colonists had vanished by 1590, leaving only the word CROATOAN carved into a post.
