Approach and anchoring

Approach through the Round Island Channel between Mackinac Island and Round Island, marked by the Round Island Passage Light. Dock depth 14 feet. VHF channel 9. Heavy ferry traffic in season, give way to ferries.

Practical

State-run harbour managed by the Michigan DNR. Berths for boats up to 110 feet. Petrol, fresh water, heads, showers. Reservations through the Michigan DNR system.

Ashore

No motor vehicles allowed on the island: travel by foot, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage. Main Street shops and restaurants directly above the harbour. Fort Mackinac at 500 metres uphill, built by the British in 1780. Bicycle route around the island at 13 km along the shore.

History

Round Island Channel has been the main shipping route past Mackinac Island since the British built Fort Mackinac in 1780 and 1781. The fort supplied British forces in the Great Lakes through the channel. Round Island Lighthouse was built in 1895 to mark the southern side of the channel.
