Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south of the island. The Raz de Sein runs immediately east and demands slack water timing at HW Brest -3h or +3h. Strong tidal streams up to 7 knots on springs. Keep clear of the Chaussée de Sein rocks marked by the Ar-Men lighthouse 4 NM west. Port du Men-Brial lies 0.6 NM east for shelter.

Practical

No facilities at the anchorage. Men-Brial harbour on the island offers limited berths and dries. Audierne on the mainland is 13.1 NM east with full services.

Ashore

Car-free village of Île de Sein at 0.6 NM, 200 inhabitants in winter. Sein lighthouse museum at the west end of the island, 1.5 km walk. The island sits 1.5 m above sea level on average and is part of the Iroise Natural Marine Park.

History

The men of Sein evacuated 128 islanders to England in June 1940 to join de Gaulle, a quarter of the Free French forces at that date. The island received the Ordre de la Libération in 1946.
