Rocky islet of La Pietra at the tip of the Ile Rousse peninsula in Balagne, north Corsica. Anchoring is prohibited in the immediate surroundings.

Approach and anchoring

Do not anchor, the area is regulated and the bottom is posidonia. Round the islet leaving the red lighthouse to starboard when entering the port of Ile Rousse 0.3 NM south. Exposed to all northerly swells.

Practical

Use Ile Rousse marina 0.3 NM south for berthing, water, fuel and services. Port Eugène Ceccaldi at Calvi 5.3 NM SW as an alternative refuge.

Ashore

Genoese lighthouse of La Pietra at the top of the red rock, connected to town by a 200 m causeway. Covered market of Ile Rousse at place Paoli 400 m from the port. Train station of the Chemins de fer de Corse on the same square for excursions to Calvi and Bastia.

History

The port and town of Ile Rousse were founded in 1758 by Pascal Paoli, leader of the short lived Corsican Republic, to break the Genoese monopoly over Balagne trade through nearby Algajola and Calvi.
