Approach and anchoring
Inland lake at 650 metres altitude, no tidal considerations. Sand bottom. Open water with fetch from every direction, local thermal winds pick up in the afternoon. Pick up a buoy rather than anchor to protect the lakebed.
Practical
No fuel or services at La Maulde itself. Port de Nergout lies 0.7 nm SE and Auphelle beach base is 1 nm W, both with pontoons, sailing school activity and a small beach. Motorboat use on Vassivière is restricted, electric and sail craft dominate.
Ashore
Île de Vassivière in the middle of the lake hosts the Centre international d'art et du paysage, contemporary art centre with a sculpture trail in the woods. Footbridge from the Pierrefitte peninsula gives walking access to the island. Lakeside cycling loop of roughly 27 km around the shore.
