Guide

Approach and anchoring

Vassivière is a 1000 hectare man made lake completed in 1950 for hydroelectric generation. No tide, no current. Water level drops by 2 to 3 m in late autumn for maintenance drawdown. Easterly winds funnel across the open lake in spring. No VHF watch.

Practical

Eight berths on a floating pontoon, summer season only. Slipway next to the port. Drinking water on the quay. No fuel berth on site; nearest at Peyrat-le-Château village, 4 km by road. Bar and creperie at Auphelle beach, 100 m from the port.

Ashore

Auphelle beach, a supervised freshwater bathing area in July and August, borders the port. Île de Vassivière reached by foot bridge or shuttle boat, home to the Centre International d'Art et du Paysage, a contemporary art centre opened in 1991 with a tower by Aldo Rossi. GR 44 long distance trail runs along the shore.
