Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south, leaving the Fort de Brescou to the north. Basalt rocks surround the island, stay clear of the western ledges. Pick up a managed buoy on sand in 5 to 10 metres, exposed to southerly winds. VHF 9 for Cap d'Agde harbour.
Practical
About 33 buoys in the managed zone, daytime use in summer, subject to reservation through the Cap d'Agde management. No services on the buoys. Cercle Nautique 0.6 nm northeast and port of Cap d'Agde 0.8 nm northeast for fuel, water and all shops.
Ashore
Fort de Brescou, built on the island from 1586 under Henri III and completed under Louis XIV, used as a state prison until the 19th century. The island is part of the Natura 2000 site Posidonies du Cap d'Agde. Diving on the basalt pinnacles and the posidonia meadows south of the island.
History
Brescou is the emerged part of a basalt flow from the Mont Saint-Loup volcano, active around 750 000 years ago. The fortification was reinforced by Vauban's engineers after 1680.
