Approach and anchoring

Approach from seaward across the baie de la Hougue, keeping the Île de Tatihou beacons clear on the port hand when bound south. Bottom of weed over sand, holding uneven; reset if the anchor drags. Open from NW through S; shelter is offered by the Cotentin coast against easterly swell.

Practical

No services on the mooring. Quinéville, 2.2 NM north-west, is a small beach resort with a limited range of shops. Port de Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, 5.8 NM north, has a marina behind a tidal gate, all services and a fuel berth.

Ashore

Utah Beach, the westernmost of the D-Day landing beaches, lies a short distance south. The Musée du Débarquement at Sainte-Marie-du-Mont documents the 6 June 1944 American landing. Quinéville holds the Musée de la Liberté Retrouvée on life under occupation.

History

The stretch of shore between Utah Beach and Quinéville was the northern shoulder of the Utah Beach sector taken by the US 4th Infantry Division on D-Day, 6 June 1944.
