Approach and anchoring

Approach from the east in the Rade de la Hougue, watching for the Île de Tatihou shoals to the north and the drying banks along the shore. The Vauban tower of La Hougue serves as a clear landmark. Sheltered from SW, W and NW winds; exposed to E and NE.

Practical

Mooring forain on sand, good holding. No services on site. All facilities at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue marina 0.8 NM north, with water, diesel and the lock to the wet basin. Quinéville harbour lies 3.6 NM south for a dries-out alternative.

Ashore

Île de Tatihou accessible by amphibious shuttle from Saint-Vaast, with the Vauban maritime museum and a bird reserve. Fort de la Hougue tower, UNESCO-listed since 2008, stands on the headland. Oyster beds of Saint-Vaast along the foreshore.

History

The roadstead was the site of the 1692 naval battle of La Hougue, where the Anglo-Dutch fleet destroyed twelve French ships of the line. Vauban fortified the two towers of La Hougue and Tatihou in 1694 to close the bay.
