Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the Courreaux de Groix, the channel between the island and the mainland of Lorient. Main entry at Port-Tudy on the north coast, marked by the red and white tower at the end of the north pier. VHF 9. The annex berth dries and takes drying keels only, with 0.7 m maximum draught.

Practical

Two berths suitable for small craft that can take the ground. Full services at Port-Tudy immediately to the SE: water, electricity, diesel, capitainerie, boatyard with slipway. Visitor pontoons and buoys inside Port-Tudy.

Ashore

Village of Port-Tudy at the top of the slipway with bakery, grocery and restaurants within 200 m. Écomusée de l'île de Groix in the former tuna cannery documents the island fishery. Plage des Grands Sables on the east coast, at 3 km by road, is one of the few convex beaches in Europe, its sand slowly migrating clockwise around the island.

History

Groix was the leading French tuna port in the late 19th century, with more than 300 dundee tuna boats based here in 1904. The last dundee, the Kenavo, was built in 1930. The tuna cannery at Port-Tudy closed in 1959 and now houses the island ecomuseum.
