Small drying harbour at the northwest tip of the Cotentin peninsula, just south of the Raz Blanchard tidal race.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach only at slack water or with favourable tide. The Raz Blanchard runs up to 10 knots off Cap de la Hague and breaks heavily in wind-against-tide. Entry channel marked by beacons between rocks, accessible roughly two hours either side of high water. VHF 9. Keep clear of the La Foraine lighthouse reef to the north-west.
Practical
Drying harbour with moorings on the sandy bottom. Station of the SNSM all-weather lifeboat Mona Rigolet based here. Few services on site. Village of Auderville with bakery, bar and small grocery within 1 km.
Ashore
Coastal path GR 223 runs from the harbour to the Nez de Jobourg cliffs, among the highest in continental Europe at 128 m, about 4 km south. Baie d'Ecalgrain beach lies 3 km south on foot. La Hague lighthouse visible offshore on its islet.
History
Goury has sheltered fishermen since at least the 18th century. The La Hague lighthouse offshore was lit in 1837 on the Gros du Raz rock to mark the tidal race that has claimed hundreds of ships.
