Approach and anchoring

Approach from the W clear of the Flamanville reefs to the N. Entry channel is narrow and subject to strong tidal streams running up to 4 knots along the coast. Lock gates open about 2.5 hours either side of high water depending on coefficient. Call the harbour office on VHF 9. Avoid entry in strong W or SW winds against the ebb.

Practical

Floating pontoons with water and electricity on all berths. Fuel berth with diesel. Showers, WC and laundry at the harbour office. Boatyard with travel lift for winter storage. Bakery and small shop in the village above the port, larger supermarket at Les Pieux 4 km inland.

Ashore

Cliffs and coastal path of the Cap de Flamanville start at the north breakwater. Beach of Sciotot with fine sand stretches 2 km south of the harbour. The Flamanville nuclear site is visible to the north, with a viewpoint at 1.5 km on the GR 223.

History

The basin was dug in the 1990s to provide a harbour of refuge on the 30-mile stretch of open coast between Cherbourg and Carteret. It served as the logistic base for construction of the Flamanville EPR reactor.
