Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchorage on a mud bottom, sheltered from N through NE to E but open to the southern and western quarters. The island itself is private and off-limits ashore. The nearest marina is 3.2 miles SW, with Sunset Cove Marina 4.3 miles SW.
History
Gardiners Island has been held by the Gardiner family since 1639, when Lion Gardiner bought it from the Montaukett. It is the oldest English settlement in New York. In June 1699 Captain William Kidd buried gold and silver in a ravine on the island while sailing to Boston to answer piracy charges.
Story
The island holds New York state's largest osprey colony, and the birds nest on the ground here, having no natural predators.
