Guide

Approach and anchoring

Enter on the flood only, through the Ouistreham channel marked by pairs of lateral buoys. The estuary dries in parts at low water, follow the buoyed channel to the mooring field on the east bank. Muddy bottom. The mooring lies inside the estuary and is protected from all sectors by the surrounding land.

Practical

180 moorings managed by the Club Nautique de Franceville. No fuel on site. Ouistreham lock at 1 nm to the W gives access to the Caen canal and the Ouistreham marina with full services.

Ashore

Franceville beach and dunes run north of the estuary, part of the Natura 2000 zone of the Orne estuary. Pegasus Bridge and its museum, site of the first liberation action of 6 June 1944 by the British 6th Airborne Division, at 4 km by road from the club.

History

The east bank of the estuary was the landing sector Sword of the British forces on 6 June 1944. The nearby Merville battery was neutralised that morning by the 9th Parachute Battalion.
