Approach and anchoring
Short row or outboard run from the main anchorage in the Golfe d'Ajaccio. Calm in prevailing westerlies, choppy when the libeccio blows into the bay. Keep clear of the ferry fairway and the line of moored yachts. VHF 9 for the marinas.
Practical
Tie-up for tenders only, no stay for keel boats. Nearest fuel berth and full services at Port Charles Ornano 0.1 nm north. Visitor berths and capitainerie at Port Tino Rossi 0.5 nm south, at the foot of the old town.
Ashore
Place Foch and the covered market are 300 m from the dock. Maison Bonaparte, birthplace of Napoleon, is 400 m inland on rue Saint-Charles. Citadel and Saint-Erasme chapel along the seafront within 600 m. Sanguinaires islands accessible by local shuttle from the quay.
History
Ajaccio was founded by the Genoese in 1492 on the site of a Roman settlement. Napoleon Bonaparte was born here in 1769, and the city served as capital of Corsica under the short-lived Anglo-Corsican kingdom from 1794 to 1796.
