Approach and anchoring
Enter the Solomons basin from the Patuxent River through the Narrows, then work up Back Creek past the marinas. The bottom is soft, sticky mud that gives good holding once the anchor is dug in. The creeks are sheltered from N through SE but open to the south-west.
Practical
Fresh water is available ashore. Calvert Marina lies 0.3 nm to the south-west and Ward's Marine Railway 0.4 nm to the north, both useful for a berth, fuel or repairs. Marinas and a boatyard ring the creek.
Ashore
The Calvert Marine Museum sits near the head of Back Creek, with exhibits on Chesapeake working craft and trips aboard the buyboat Wm. B. Tennison and the skipjack Dee of St. Mary's. Shops and restaurants line Solomons Island Road within walking distance.
