Approach and anchoring

Buoyed channel between groynes subject to silting, dredged periodically. Entry possible around 3 hours either side of high water for a 1.5 m draught. Avoid strong N to NE winds which raise steep seas on the bar. Call the harbour office on VHF 9. Two basins inside: the outer harbour on half-tide pontoons and the inner wet basin with constant depth.

Practical

Water and electricity on pontoons, diesel at the fuel berth on the outer basin. Showers, WC and laundry at the harbour office. Boatyard with crane. Bakery, butcher and market in the town centre 200 m from the berths, hypermarket at 1 km.

Ashore

Juno Beach Centre museum on the west jetty commemorates the Canadian landings of 6 June 1944. Oyster farming basins on the east bank of the Seulles produce the Courseulles oyster, tastings at the market hall on the quay. Cycle path along the coast to Arromanches 10 km west and Ouistreham 15 km east.

History

Courseulles was the landing point of Juno Beach on D-Day, taken by the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division. General de Gaulle stepped ashore here on 14 June 1944 on his first return to French soil during the Liberation.
