Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reach Châteaulin by the tidal Aulne from Landévennec, then through the Guily-Glas lock which opens around high water. From the lock, 8 km of still water lead to the town quays. Mud bottom gives full 360-degree shelter behind the lock. Port Launais lies 1.2 nm NE, Port du Faou 7 nm NW back toward the estuary.
Practical
Free town pontoon with water on the right bank below the church. No electricity or fuel. Town centre, bakery, supermarket and railway station to Brest and Quimper within 500 m of the quay.
History
Châteaulin was the salmon capital of Brittany until the 20th century, with the Aulne supplying markets across the region. The town still holds salmon on its coat of arms.
