Anchorage on the west coast of Corsica, in the bay of Cargese between the gulf of Sagone and the gulf of Porto.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from seaward, cape Cargese to the south and punta d'Omigna to the north. Sand bottom, good holding where clear of posidonia. Shelter from north-east through east to south-east, open to the prevailing west and libeccio from the south-west.
Practical
Small harbour of Cargese 0.9 nm to the west with limited visitor berths, water and fuel at the quay. Port de Sagone lies 3.3 nm to the east as a second option.
Ashore
Village of Cargese on its rocky spur was founded in 1676 by Greek families from Mani in the Peloponnese fleeing Ottoman rule. The Greek Catholic church of Saint-Spyridon and the Latin church of the Assumption face each other across the ravine, both still in use today.
History
The Greek colony received land from the Genoese and later from the French crown under Louis XV. The current village was rebuilt further inland after the first settlement at Paomia was destroyed in 1731.
