Approach and anchoring
Approach from the S on deep water, the entrance is clear between the cliff walls. Anchor on rock, holding is poor on pure rock so look for sandy pockets or use the ecological mooring buoys installed by the national park where available. Sheltered from N, NE, W and NW winds, open to the S and exposed to any southerly swell.
Practical
No services in the calanque itself. Frioul harbour 1.2 nm NE has water, diesel, WC and a summer shuttle to Marseille Vieux-Port.
Ashore
Footpaths cross Pomègues from the calanque up to the old Caroline hospital ruins and down to Port-Frioul. Landing by tender is allowed outside seabird nesting closures signed by the park.
History
Pomègues and Ratonneau were used as quarantine islands from the 17th century, and the Hôpital Caroline on the adjacent island was built in the 1820s to isolate yellow fever cases.
