Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south by the Passe de Pomègues. Rocky bottom, poor holding: prefer a mooring buoy where provided or set the anchor only on clearly visible sand patches. Sheltered from SE, S and SW. Exposed to the mistral from NW to N. Watch for the unmarked submerged rocks running out from the headland.
Practical
Day stop in light southerlies. Port of Pomègues 0.8 nm to the NE and main Port du Frioul 1 nm to the NE for overnight shelter. No services on this side of the island.
Ashore
Coastal path across Pomègues toward the Hôpital Caroline ruins on Ratonneau, 2 km on foot. The archipelago lies within the Parc national des Calanques: anchoring, diving and fishing are regulated within the marine zone.
History
Pomègues and Ratonneau were used as quarantine stations from the 17th century. The Hôpital Caroline was built from 1823 to 1828 to isolate yellow fever cases arriving from the Antilles. The islands were linked by the Berry dyke in 1822.
